Uplifting, fun, smart, personal, cultured, jolly and above all creative.
Those are just some of the words that describe Chasing Owls debut EP ‘We Began’.
It’s an outstanding recording, and the best debut release I can remember from any band.
‘Wedding Song’ is a catchy opener complete with hand claps and Mumford and Sons style folk guitar accompaniment. It’s almost reminiscent of a Scottish jig, especially when the solo kicks in.
After this upbeat opener, Chasing Owls move into a more melancholy, but equally beautiful state, with “Magic Land”. There’s plenty of spiritual imagery with talk of Moses mountains, calls for peace and a “heartfelt desire for a hope sourced higher than this”. Next track ‘Glory’ features ferocious strumming, and haunting lyrics above light percussion.
Next up is a live recording of ‘Home’. Ben and Naomi’s voices intertwine perfectly, in this emotional filled ballad. “Home will find you. Home will guide you free.” The band could have finished the EP here and been proud of their efforts. But there’s more as we are treated to a final Scottish sing along. “You breath fire on the souls of the free” Ben sings with all the energy you’ve come to expect from this talented songwriter.
Chasing Owls could be Scotland’s best kept secret. But recent airplay on both Radio 1 and Radio 2 is set to change that. When it comes to buying this EP, it’s quite simply a no-brainer. Just get it, you won’t be disappointed.
